How this was calculated
- Amounts from USCIS Form G-1055, edition 10/07/26, and the State Department fee page, read on October 13, 2026.
- Not counted because no agency sets them: the civil surgeon’s medical exam, translations, photos and any lawyer.

The citizenship application fee for Form N-400 is $760 on paper and $710 when filed online, under the USCIS fee schedule G-1055 dated 10/07/26. A reduced fee of $380, half the paper price, applies when household income is at or below 400% of the federal poverty guidelines, and it can only be requested on a paper filing. That makes the online discount and the income discount mutually exclusive: an applicant who qualifies for the reduced rate saves $380 by mailing the form, while one who does not saves $50 by filing online. The current schedule has no separate biometrics charge on top of the N-400. Each spouse files and pays separately, so a married couple naturalizing together pays $1,520 on paper at the standard rate. The fee is the same for the five-year and the three-year spouse-of-citizen routes.
One form, three price tags
Most USCIS forms have two prices, paper and online. The N-400 has three. $760 is the standard paper fee, $710 the online fee, and $380 the reduced fee for households at or below 400% of the federal poverty guidelines. The catch sits in the last line of the fee schedule: the reduced rate is paper only. Someone who qualifies and files online out of habit pays $330 more than necessary.
| How you file | Fee | Saving against paper |
|---|---|---|
| Paper, standard | $760 | $0 |
| Online, standard | $710 | $50 |
| Paper, reduced (income at or under 400% of poverty) | $380 | $380 |
Paying for an application that is not ready
A citizenship fee buys a decision, not a certificate. Filing more than 90 days before the five-year mark (three years for the spouse of a citizen) or with fewer than 913 days inside the country in the last five years (548 on the three-year route) is the most common way to lose the money. The early filing calculator counts both from your trips, and the residence guide explains why a trip of more than six months raises questions.
Couples and families
There is no family rate. Each spouse files a separate N-400 and pays a separate fee. Under 8 CFR 320.2, children under 18 who hold a green card and reside in the United States in the legal and physical custody of the citizen parent become citizens automatically when that parent naturalizes; their proof of citizenship is a different form with a different fee, not covered here.
After you pay
The wait that follows depends on your field office; see the N-400 processing time by office. If your case involves arrests, long absences or a past immigration problem, a licensed immigration attorney or a DOJ-accredited representative should look at it before the fee is spent.
